Character: Crystal
Age: 16
Canon: Pokémon Special
Canon Point: Post-HGSS
Background: The wild CHARACTER PAGE was caught!
Personality: Generally, Crystal is a kind, cheerful young woman who loves working with people (especially children). She's fairly motherly, worrying over friends and strangers alike, and is the kind of person to do her best no matter the circumstances. However, give her a Pokémon to catch – or a job to complete – and her personality switches almost completely: she becomes a serious, prissy woman who has very little time for nonsense and even less for the people who cause it. This change is so radical it evokes actual, legitimate surprise from those who witness it. Seeing her cheerful side would probably be rarer nowadays, with how much work she's given and takes on.
Which leads into how busy she keeps herself. Being reliable and keeping up to both her expectations (instilled into her by her mother) and society's expectations of a capture expert, it's no wonder that she's as busy as she is. She does anything given to her to the best of her ability and keeps her promises to a T, making her reliability much more than just information. She's one of the first people that Professor Oak, the leading expert in all things Pokémon, goes to to get things done. He counts on her for a number of things aside from filling the Pokédex, shown in the fact she's now an aide to him personally instead of to her regional professor Elm.
No matter which side of her personality is switched on, Crystal's shown to be a very determined, dedicated character. Within the first week of her job (to get Pokédex data on every Pokémon in the Kanto-Johto Pokémon/capture them all), she caught over 142 different types of Pokémon as well as repeats, mostly the notable ones (such as different sizes, different teeth length, and even differently colored Pokémon – that's right, she's got shinies). By the end of GSC's chapter, she's actually caught every (non-legendary) Pokémon in the Kanto and Johto regions! Her mother is the reason she's so dedicated to her job, having drilled “A professional doesn't stop until the job's done” into Crystal's mind since she was a little girl.
Off of her job, she's dedicated her time to helping Violet City's orphanage as a volunteer worker and teacher. While she doesn't visit the children as much when she's on job during GSC or Emerald, she's shown bringing them on a day trip to the newly opened Cianwood Safari Zone in HGSS – she still very much works with them and has a lot of fun doing it! Working with them isn't as much of a job as it is something she uses to unwind and relax with, because it isn't something the world – or an entire in-progress portable encyclopedia – depends on to get taken care of. The orphanage is also motivation for taking on Professor Oak's job of filling the Pokédex: She promises to do the job as long as he gives the academy funding so it can be safe for the children to live and learn there. Her heart's really in it for children and their dreams – the lives they want to lead – and she's determined to resolve anything that gets in the way of that (like, say, Team Rocket).
While she's good with people, Crystal has a massive critical failure when it comes to connecting with Pokémon. She's gotten better about it, somewhat, but it's still hard for her to connect with Pokémon that aren't her in-rotation team. Once, she lost her ability to capture Pokémon perfectly because she was traumatized by not being able to understand what Suicune wanted (what it needed); she just viewed it as a Pokémon that needed to be captured for the Pokédex, a perfectly legitimate thing to think considering her mission given to her at the time was do to just that and capturing Pokémon is what she's worked her skill set into since she was five years old.
By the time she's kicking a Pokéball in Arceus's face, she's better and doesn't get badly shaken up by it not going in – she just goes after it, because it has incredibly sad eyes. She's the one who opens its heart up a little bit and enables it into going to the Sinjoh Ruins, even if she didn't realize it at the time; it's leagues better than the first time we see her going after a legendary Pokémon. (That same legendary Pokémon ended up trusting her, showing that she at least began to open herself up and try to communicate and understand Pokémon past creatures that need to be captured to further research, development, and a better world for children to grow in.)
Abilities: Aside from an iron will and steadfast dedication to finishing what she's started, Crystal has a killer kick. Might be literal. She's learned to use her feet for a lot of things (as her arms were broken when she was a kid), and as a result she has a really, really, really powerful kick. Not to mention perfect accuracy, even with moving targets! As long as she's using her legs, at least.
Alignment: Elios. She's motherly and loving, and even when she is irritated it's generally because she cares about the person. She's not as forgiving as some people
Other: Crystal'll have her handy-dandy Pokédex (image; it's pink and white!) and totally 100% awesome Pokégear (image; it's... also pink and white!)...
Along with various Pokéballs; I'm just going to go ahead and say five of each of the following: Poké Ball, Great Ball, Level Ball, Lure Ball, Moon Ball, Friend Ball, Love Ball, Heavy Ball, and Fast Ball. (Not that any of these have any real use in Empatheias, but they would definitely be on her coming in, seeing as she is the Catcher and gets everything from Level Ball down to Fast Ball specially made for her and her mother.)
And, of course, a few of her fantastic teammates:
Megaree, a male Meganium with a Hardy nature. He's an exceptionally friendly pokémon that was given to her by Professor Elm, since it wanted to be with its fellow starter friends Cyndaquil and Totodile (the former which went with Gold and the latter which was stolen by Silver). He's fearless and has proven this many times!
Archy, a male Arcanine with a Hasty nature. He was the main battler of her team until Megaree came around, and he's often used to get around on ground quicker.
Bonee, a male Cubone with a Lonely nature. His specialty is using False Swipe, which keeps an enemy at low health without knocking them out; it's extremely useful for catching Pokémon, or just making sure you still have the upper hand without getting messy.
Parasee, a female Parasect with a Brave nature. Crystal's trained her to be able to release her spores over various distances with an expert's precision.
Chumee, a female Smoochum with a Rash nature. She's Crystal's first Pokémon and a real sweetheart. With the addition of Megaree, she usually stays at home or in the lab during work hours, but she used to be part of Crystal's main catching team—by keeping targets rooted to the spot with a Mean Look.
